About Burkin Show Team

TOP TIPS:

We are friendly, professional producers of top class show horses, ponies and their riders. We aim to make the experience both enjoyable and successful.We take horses and ponies to break and school as well as producing for owners, with or without their own rider.We work with our clients and ponies on an individual basis to meet their requirements, this allows us to reach a higher standard of performance.Burkin Show Team is run by Karen Burkin and her daughter Sophie. The team was founded in 2002 after we produced our own Ainthorpe Morning Surprise to take the Pretty Polly Show Pony Championship at the British Show Pony Society Championships and qualifying for Horse of the Year Show in 2001.Since then we have relocated to more superior premises and have produced numerous ponies to take 28 Royal International Horse Show & Horse of the year show qualifying tickets from a small team of ponies. We treat every horse and pony as if they are our own; each is individual and requires different routine. Our horses and ponies are kept in a calm, happy environment, with all year turnout to ensure they have as natural life as possible. The majority of our work is all done at home, this allows us to make sure the show day goes as smoothly as it can. We are dedicated to giving the ponies and riders we produce the best chance of success at the highest level. We believe that it is our hard work and attention to detail that has allowed us to be so successful.

Karen Burkin Simple

Karen BurkinKaren has been working with horses for over 30 years. She holds a HNC in Equine Management and is a BHSAI qualified instructor, Karen has vast experience in breeding, management, training and competing.Karen has competed to BE Intermediate Level, Show Jumped at BSJA B's, C's and Open's, plus competed in British Dressage. During the last ten years Karen has concentrated on producing both riders and ridden horses/ponies to the highest level Showing, Including Horse Of The Year Show, Royal International Horse Show & Olympia Horse Show.Karen teaches, trains and competes many of the horses and ponies at the yard. She is a highly regarded instructor and continues to train students successfully to top level in whichever discipline they compete and is available for freelance lessons.

Sophie Burkin Sophie BurkinSophie has been riding and competing since the age of 2 years, gaining over 10 years experience competing at County/Championship level. Qualifying Horse of the Year Show and Royal International Horse Show every year in since 2000. Sophie is a very capable rider, being small and lightweight allows her to ride a range of horses and ponies, from 12hh upwards. After completing her A-Levels, Sophie studied a National Award in Equine Management at Askham Bryan College and passed her BHS Stages 1 & 2. Sophie is currently working towards her teaching exams and her BHS Stages 3 & 4 whilst studying a Business Management Degree at York St John University.Sophie is available for freelance schooling and competing.

The Team Sophie Townsend - Yard GroomSophie has been part of our team since April 2010 having previously worked for the Middleton Hunt following the completion of her National Diploma in Equine Studies at Askham Bryan College. Sophie is responsible for the day to day duties on the yard and works closely with Karen assisting with breaking and schooling.Elizabeth Wilkinson - Cheerleader/ Hairy Pony EnthusiastLizzie has a BSC Honours Degree in Equine Science and has previously worked for Spillers. She has her own Fell pony on DIY at the yard and has a great interest in showing, regularly helping at the yard and shows.Vicky Easterby - NST PractitionerSpecialist in NST (Neuro Structural Integration Technique) & Bowen Therapy. Vicky is a very experienced horsewoman, she has a confident and calm attitude when treating our horses and ponies. We have found this form of therapy very successful and have experienced amazing results. He is a natural horseman, he is extremely patient and gentle when shoeing difficult horses. Mike has an excellent eye for movement and conformation and is specialist in Remedial work.Dan Astle-Carter - Equine DentistDan is a highly qualified equine dentist having studied BSc (Hons) Equine Dental Science, he is B.E.V.A. / B.V.D.A. Approved, & B.A.E.D.T. Registered and also has a HNC Horse Studies. Dan has been our equine dentist over the past year and uses Le Clair electrical equipment and a comprehensive selection of top range manual rasps. StablesLight, airy Internal loose boxes & traditional stables. Variety of sizes from 12' x 8' to 15' x 12'. Fitted with rubber matting, automatic drinkers & HayBars. We have 2 large indoor barns, perfect for breaking youngsters.All Year TurnoutWe currently have 10 acres of good quality pasture which is carefully maintained and rotated. Fenced with Horse fencing and electric rope, providing secure and safe paddocks.All Weather Arena20m x 40m Springy, anti freezing 'Giffords Cushion Ride' woodchip arena, surrounded by Post and rail fencing providing a safe area to exercise horses and ponies for any discipline. We have a full set of show and working hunter jumps available for use, stored close to the arena.HackingWe have miles of fantastic off road hacking on the beautiful Aldby Park estate. Through glorious unspoilt woodland with stunning surroundings.
